While perusing the latest amazing, beyond-CNN.com web numbers for this here site, I started thinking about which stories really gained your eye as that enables me to do two things.
One is write more of what you guys want and therefore get more traffic and then turn this site into the giant massive Indiana Jones-type boulder coming down the path and two, slit my wrists when something that I thought was funny and took a ton of time, like the USGP TV show parody, barely gets any attention.
I have to give credit where credit is due for sure. Without Racer X putting these things in their Breaking News box, I wouldn’t have half the readership that I do. So thank you from me to them for helping a brother out. Thank you to you guys for the over half a millon page views that this place has gotten in only 11 months.
Also, some of the November and December stories (like mine and Ping’s FMF Honda days) aren’t on here but have the "pace" to be on if there were more than 12 months in a year.
Also, the top five sites that give Pulp the most love (besides Google and Twitter and all that) are as follows:
Racer X
Vital MX.com
Motonews.com
Mxforum.com
Thumpertalk.com
This being close to the year end, everyone loves lists so without further adieu, here are the top fifteen most-read stories on Pulpmx.com:
1-Tell Us a Story, Jeremy McGrath
(This shows you the star power and likability of MC. It was a great story for sure and he got into great detail about the shot but to me it was no less interesting than a bunch of other ‘Tell Us a Stories’ but because everyone loves Jeremy, it got great response. )
2-Twenty-Four Minutes, Seventeen Seconds with James Stewart
(Between the podcasts and these interviews we’ve done, Stewart and I have developed, what I think anyways, a bit of a repore. He’s a good guy that’s open to fair criticism and I like to think he respects me a bit because I will call him out on something if I see it. I mean let’s face it, he doesn’t have many people around him telling it like it is. He’s a great interviewee and always gives me something good.)
3-Forty Minutes, Sixteen Seconds with James Stewart
(Another thing about our sport that is weird is that Stewie and Chad Reed always do way better numbers on the podcasts than anyone else I’ve ever spoken to. People want the other competitors to get press and I agree but looking at it from a numbers point of view-why wouldn’t I focus on James and Chad? I’m talking 10,000 more listens than anyone else. Look how good both interviews with Stewie turned out for Pulp. I imagine a Jason Lawrence interview or podcast would blow these two guys out of the water but don’t hold your breath. So now you know that anytime I have one of these guys on the show, it’s because I’m desperate for ratings. It’s like a Kelsey Grammar guest-spot on a struggling sitcom!)
4-Alessi’s Comp? Himself.
(This was a big story for me for sure but I think that part of the attraction of it, if that’s even possible, is that there was a thread on Vitalmx.com that got something like 20K people checking it out. And that thread only got as big as it did because Tony Alessi chimed in with a few thoughts on how I was wrong. I stand by this story and I hope that something good does happen to Mike in the near future. I don’t see how a guy giving his opinion on a racer is such a bad thing as some people make it out to be. We need more of this in our sport in my opinion.)
5-Tell Us a Story, Ron Lechien
(Dogger is epic and he’s got a great memory so all the ‘Tell Us a Story’ columns with him are cool. He’s always been accommodating to me as well whenever I’ve called him. Great guy and great story teller.)
6-Red Dog- A Career in Pictures
( I really enjoyed this one and not just because of the subject. Well, ok maybe a little because of the subject. It took me a long time to get all these photos and I have to thank Racer X for some of them and Google images for some of them as well. I loved these stories in the mags and always wanted to do one with Ferry because he’s been around for so long and ridden for so many teams. This was a lot of work because transcribing isn’t what I excel at. Eating yes, transcribing-no.)
7-Jason Lawrence: A Year in Jail
(I guess if you want to say that I “broke” this story, you could. Not that it was that big of a deal but I knew from a source where to look at all of Jason’s public records and I saw that he was getting sentenced three days after Steel City. I actually forgot to look on the day to see what happened until about 9 PM. I checked it out and couldn’t believe it. I read it a few times and sent it to my lawyer buddy to make sure I was reading it right. Which I was. So I was going to wait and give it to Racer X first but then I thought, well maybe they wouldn’t print it right away without a reaction from the other side and by that point maybe someone else would bring it up. I felt strongly that this was public record and I didn’t need to wait on anything (and RXI in the morning also went with it like I did but who knew?) to make this public. So I did. It wasn’t much of a story…just a paragraph but it spread like wildfire which seems to happen to anything that Jason does.)
8-Tell Us a Story, Ron Lechien
9-Twenty-Three Minutes, Seven Seconds with Ron Lechien
(The world can’t get enough of Ron ‘The Machine’ Lechien and neither could the readers of Pulpmx.com it appears.)
10-Tell Us a Story, David Pingree
( Ping is funny as hell and anytime I can do anything with him, story, podcast, go to a race with him- I will.)
11-Toronto Supercross Blog
(These blogs were something I did a few supercrosses here and there. They got good numbers but to be honest, they took away from the night of watching supercross. I was worried about getting a post up and maybe missing something or not being able to digest something properly. For example, the Lawrence/Hepler thing at Jacksonville made me mad and looking back, although I still believe it was effed up of Lawrence to do what he did, I was maybe a bit harsh for a blog. Also there is always the fear of upsetting the SX people with something I say and getting their panties all in a knot.)
12-An Honest Look at the 450 Motocross Class Points
(I like doing these and always looked for a unique picture to go along with the caption. I don’t think that the dudes outside the top five really get much press although maybe some of them wished I had never looked at them and their results. Anyways, I enjoy doing these things and will continue to do them)
13-Tell Us a Story, Jeff Ward
(I did this one on the back of a bumper at the Las Vegas Supermoto Race where Wardy, Micky Dymond and others raced in front of ten people. The race sucked but hanging out with Ping and The Flying Freckle was cool. Anyways, one of the best podcasts I did was with Jeff, check it out and make sure you have some time on your hands because it’s almost two hours long!)
14-Best Supercross Riders of the ‘80s
(I read some sort of best-of list and thought, there has to be a way to figure out the best supercross riders of each decade. So I came up with this cheeseball points system, opened up the AMA record book and had my wife help me tabulate the points the guys earned. Which she wasn’t thrilled about because it kept her from being able to concentrate on The Doogan family and their quest to keep pumping out kids. Anyways, I thought this was cool and apparently, so did some of you.)
15- An Honest Look at the 250 Motocross Class Points
So that’s it, thanks for reading this site and thanks for making it a success of some sort. I appreciate it and look for some changes in the New Year with myself and this site. We’re going to implement a forum and of course, this will be the home of the MotoworldRacing.com Moto Show. We’re going to try and make it by the people, for the people and whatever other crap that saying says.
What about you guys? What was your favorite story of the year here on Pulpmx.com?
