We have now had 15 total Triple Crown Supercross rounds since the format started in 2018. While only Eli Tomac has started all 15 of these events, we now have a decent sample size to compare how riders fare in the standard main even format vs the Triple Crowns.
I’ll first compare how riders stats in standard mains compare to their overall Triple Crown results. I’ll then compare those to the individual races/main events/sprints/motos/gangbangs…whatever we call them, you get the point.
The cutoff I’m using is at least 10 standard main event starts and 5 Triple Crowns overalls starts, so no Lawrence brothers in this breakdown. And unfortunately, no Adam Cianciarulo as he only has three Triple Crown starts.
And I am only comparing active 450 riders, this really only leaves out Justin Brayton and Marvin Musquin.
All data is through the first 6 rounds of 2023.
Lets break it down:
Riders Average Finish in Standard Mains vs Triple Crown Overalls
Rider | Standard Avg Finish | TC Avg Finish | DELTA |
Chase Sexton | 5.63 | 2.71 | +2.91 |
Eli Tomac | 4.74 | 2.20 | +2.54 |
Jason Anderson | 6.15 | 3.92 | +2.23 |
Malcolm Stewart | 10.30 | 8.22 | +2.08 |
Fredrik Noren | 18.09 | 16.80 | +1.29 |
Christian Craig | 10.61 | 9.40 | +1.21 |
Vince Friese | 14.62 | 13.44 | +1.17 |
Aaron Plessinger | 8.60 | 7.78 | +0.82 |
Benny Bloss | 15.21 | 14.43 | +0.78 |
Justin Barcia | 7.75 | 7.43 | +0.32 |
Shane McElrath | 13.40 | 13.50 | -0.10 |
Ken Roczen | 5.15 | 5.67 | -0.52 |
Dean Wilson | 10.13 | 10.79 | -0.65 |
Cooper Webb | 4.92 | 5.64 | -0.72 |
Kyle Chisholm | 14.26 | 15.20 | -0.94 |
Justin Hill | 11.29 | 12.60 | -1.31 |
- Not too much of a surprise to see Tomac and Anderson second and third here, but I was surprised to see Sexton first.
- Shouldn’t be too surprising that most riders here see improvement in their overall average finish, as the three races give you a chance to make up for the overall.
- While the delta for Cooper Webb isn’t a large difference, I did not think it would be a negative given his wins in Triple Crowns
Riders Career Win Percentage % in Standard Mains vs Triple Crown Overalls
Rider | Standard Win % | TC Win % | DELTA |
Eli Tomac | 28.57% | 46.67% | +18.10% |
Cooper Webb | 18.37% | 28.57% | +10.20% |
Aaron Plessinger | 1.61% | 0.00% | -1.61% |
Chase Sexton | 16.28% | 14.29% | -1.99% |
Jason Anderson | 10.24% | 7.69% | -2.54% |
Justin Barcia | 4.29% | 0.00% | -4.29% |
Ken Roczen | 16.54% | 8.33% | -8.20% |
- Tomac leads the way here as he has won 7 of the 15 Triple Crown Overalls.
- With Webb having a positive difference here it was a surprise to see his average finish is actually lower in Triple Crowns
- Ken Roczen has just one Triple Crown Overall win – Glendale 2020
Riders Career Podium Percentage % in Standard Mains vs Triple Crown Overalls
Rider | Standard Podium % | TC Podium % | DELTA |
Eli Tomac | 54.55% | 86.67% | +32.12% |

Cooper Webb | 51.02% | 42.86% | -8.16% |
Justin Barcia | 22.86% | 7.14% | -15.71% |
Ken Roczen | 49.61% | 25.00% | -24.61% |
- Tomac’s numbers are pretty insane here
- Roczen once again has a steep drop-off, this is surprising given how strong of a starter he is in the early laps. A 25% podium rate is still pretty good but we are talking about Ken Roczen here
Riders Career Laps Led Percentage % in Standard Mains vs Triple Crowns
Rider | Standard LL % | TC LL % | DELTA |
Jason Anderson | 7.08% | 20.42% | +13.35% |
Chase Sexton | 22.58% | 30.03% | +7.45% |
Eli Tomac | 22.49% | 29.29% | +6.80% |

Dean Wilson | 0.83% | 0.00% | -0.83% |
Aaron Plessinger | 3.03% | 0.00% | -3.03% |
Justin Barcia | 4.85% | 1.51% | -3.34% |
Cooper Webb | 13.08% | 8.72% | -4.36% |
Ken Roczen | 22.58% | 16.25% | -6.34% |
- Once Again, Anderson, Sexton and Tomac leading the way here
- In Cooper Webb’s last two Triple Crown wins, there were a total of 90 laps…he led just a total of 6 of those laps.
- Roczen hasn’t led a lap in a Triple Crown since Arlington 2020
Now onto the standard main events vs the individual races in the Triple Crowns, I’ll call them motos in the headers to clear up any confusion.
I’ll have a minimum of 10 motos as the cutoff, so once again no Lawrence brothers. This will add riders such as Dylan Ferrandis and Cade Clason.

Kyle Chisholm | 14.26 | 15.47 | -1.21 |
Cooper Webb | 4.92 | 6.17 | -1.25 |
- Chase Sexton’s worst moto finish in a Triple Crown moto is 11th.
- How about Freddie Noren with the second best improvement!
- Cooper Webb comes in last with the largest negative difference. These are due to Minneapolis 2018 where he came in 22nd in each moto. As well as Arlington 2020, where his famous dragon’s back crash was. Webb finished 17th in the second moto and then 20th in the third.

- Similar to the overall numbers for the most part here, but a good improvement for Malcolm Stewart
- I keep highlighting Roczen, and once again his Triple Crown rates are good, but for Roczen they are a significant drop off
