Through 7 rounds of 450 Supercross in 2024, there have been 175 potential points up for grabs and the current points standing is:
Rider | Points through 7 Rounds 2024 | Points Percentage % |
Jett Lawrence | 135 | 77.14% |
Cooper Webb | 132 | 75.43% |
Aaron Plessinger | 128 | 73.14% |
Chase Sexton | 127 | 72.57% |
Eli Tomac | 122 | 69.71% |
Jason Anderson | 118 | 67.43% |
Ken Roczen | 116 | 66.29% |
Why do I highlight the percentage? Two reasons. First, the contrast to last year and secondly, what makes 85% a key benchmark.
In 2023, through 7 rounds, there were 182 potential points available and the points standings were:
Rider | Points through 7 Rounds 2023 | Points Percentage % |
Eli Tomac | 160 | 87.91% |
Cooper Webb | 158 | 86.81% |
Chase Sexton | 155 | 85.16% |
Jason Anderson | 130 | 71.43% |
Ken Roczen | 122 | 67.03% |
Aaron Plessinger | 121 | 66.48% |
Justin Barcia | 113 | 62.09% |
Massive drop off for Tomac, and a pretty big drop off for Webb and Sexton comparing 2023 to 2024 for these riders.
At this point last year in 2023, it was pretty clear that it was a three man race with Tomac, Webb and Sexton leading the way – and they were on a pretty historic pace for 3 separate riders, all being above 85%…

34 | Jeremy McGrath | 1995 | 15 | 375 | 320 | 85.33% | 1st |
Of the 34 instances above, there were only 4 instances of riders scoring above 85% and NOT winning the title. Those who didn’t win the title in the table above are in bold.
Chad Reed three times in 2003, 2005 and 2009, and Kevin Windham in 2004. So basically, it takes prime Chad Reed or Kevin Windham in his best ever season to score that high of a percentage of points and not win the title.
This is what makes that 2023 Tomac, Webb and Sexton stat at the time pretty incredible and shows how hard it is to maintain that separation from the rest of the field. When all three were healthy after round 14 last year, only Tomac had above 85%, with 86.54%. Then of course, injuries happened to Webb and Tomac, and Sexton never even got back to 85%.
Not even Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart and Chad Reed reached 85% in 2006 when they were way ahead of the rest of the field. And these riders shared the podium together in 10 of 16 rounds in 2006!
And again, for 2024 so far, we aren’t really even close with Jett Lawrence leading at 77.14%. Even if Jett won the next three races, he would still be at 84.00%.
And below 85% is the key threshold where we start to see more non champions:
Non Champions in bold.

Some of these percentages are lowered by the champion not racing one of the last few rounds due to injury, such as Ryan Villopoto in 2012 and Eli Tomac in 2022.
The lowest points percentage ever for a champion is David Bailey in 1983, he scored 289 of 400 possible points for 72.25%.
Now obviously, the higher points percentage, the more likely to be the champion. However, I am highlighting this as for 2024, through 7 rounds, no one is even at 80%, making this season pretty unpredictable. If the season were to end today, Jett Lawrence would have the 73rd highest points percentage for a season in Supercross history with 77.14%. This is a good sign for the championship competitiveness, unless of course someone goes on a run winning the majority of the remaining races. And given what we have seen in first 7 rounds, I don’t see that happening.
If we base someone getting to 85% at the end of the year as that rider in all likelihood will be the champion (30/34 times or 88.24% of the time they are), then, its going to take someone to make a leap forward over everyone else. If no one gets to 85%, then it is anyone’s game. This season has been amazing so far and I think it will continue to be.
