Which 450 Supercross Riders Have Missed the Most Races?
I wanted to know which riders have missed the most races due to primarily injury. But as well as not qualifying for the main event or any other reason. To answer this, I first filtered down to riders with 20 career Premier Class Supercross starts. Then I filtered by riders who have at least 1 career podium. This is for being able to estimate riders who should always be making main events. I feel like if you have podiumed you will always be a main event rider even past your prime. You’ll see that one rider slips through and will be on this list that probably shouldn’t (If you listen to the Re-Raceables podcast you can probably guess this one).
The next thing to note is that I didn’t include years where a rider wasn’t a full-time Premier Class rider. So for example, Chad Reed’s races in 2002 won’t count, Ryan Dungey in 2008, etc.
However, to determine the total eligible races, I am including any year once they were a full-time rider through their last season. This excludes anything obvious like Cole Seely returning for a couple races last year – his 2024 season will count. However, I am not counting when he was retired between 2020 and 2023.
This should hopefully clear up any gaps but it won’t be perfect, data almost never is!
Also – I am not including 2025 in this analysis.
Anyways onto he data!

- Josh Hill leads the way here. Hill had a great start to his career in 2008, picking up a win at Minneapolis. However, his injuries kept him away for several years. Many years, he has no main event starts, including: 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
- Robbie Reynard’s full time season debut in the Premier Class was 1999. Only in 1999 and 2001, Reynard had over 10+ starts. Reynard had no starts in 2003.
- Josh Grant won his first 450 Supercross race (as a full-time 450 rider) in 2009. However, in his 11 seasons as a full-time 450 rider, he only completed all 17 rounds one time in 2015. In 2010 and 2011, he only had one main event start in each of those years.
- James Stewart comes in at 11th here. This does include his missed 2015 season for his suspension despite not being eligible to race. Stewart completed all the races in a season 5 times (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014).
- This list is more skewed towards more modern riders given this looking at the total, we’ll look at percentage wise next:

- We see less modern era riders when looking at the relative difference here.
- Travis Pastrana leads the way here, Pastrana was frequently injured when he went into the Premier Class full-time starting in 2002. His most rounds in one season was just 9 in 2002.
- Micky Dymond joins Pastrana as the only riders above 70%.
- Jimmy Ellis is the only champion on this list in 15th.
- We see Josh Hill go from first to 9th here.
- Jacob Marsack made this list! He sneaks on due to his 3rd place podium at the mudder in Daytona 2008
Other Notable Riders – Percentage of Races Missed
% Rank | Rider | Potential Rounds | Starts | Missed Rounds | Missed Rounds % | Years |
24 | Adam Cianciarulo | 85 | 45 | 40 | 47.06% | 2020 – 2024 |
31 | Trey Canard | 119 | 69 | 50 | 42.02% | 2011 – 2017 |
50 | Rick Johnson | 155 | 100 | 55 | 35.48% | 1981 – 1991 |
67 | Dean Wilson | 170 | 123 | 47 | 27.65% | 2015 – 2024 |
69 | Marvin Musquin | 136 | 99 | 37 | 27.21% | 2016 – 2023 |
77 | Malcolm Stewart | 136 | 103 | 33 | 24.26% | 2017 – 2024 |
80 | Ken Roczen | 187 | 143 | 44 | 23.53% | 2014 – 2024 |
Included some notable riders to go over.
- Adam Cianciarulo was plagued with injuries throughout his career, he ended up missing just under 50% of the SX races when in the Premier Class. This was a little lower than I had expected.
- Trey Canard is also a bit lower than I expected as well.
- Dean Wilson is lower than I expected as well. However, outside of 2015 and 2016 with knee injuries, Dean raced the vast majority of races from 2017 – 2023. Wilson missed just 12 races between those years.
- I included Marvin Musquin because he is actually far higher than I would have thought. His 450 Career overlaps a lot with Dean Wilson’s and I would not have expected them to be so close. Musquin missed all of 2020 and all but one race in 2023.
- Malcolm Stewart is also lower than I would have guessed. Malcolm missed most of 2019 and 2023 which puts him in this position.
- Roczen is about where I would expect he missed a lot of races in 2017 and 2018, but for the most part Roczen has always completed all 17 rounds.
So what about the riders who have missed the least amount of races?
Premier Class Supercross Least Races Missed – by Percentage

3 | Jeff Stanton | 122 | 113 | 9 | 7.38% | 1987 – 1994 |

12 | Ryan Hughes | 46 | 40 | 6 | 13.04% | 1996 – 1998 |
13 | Johnny O’Mara | 137 | 119 | 18 | 13.14% | 1981 – 1990 |
14 | Chad Reed | 301 | 261 | 40 | 13.29% | 2003 – 2020 |
15 | Jeff Emig | 124 | 107 | 17 | 13.71% | 1992 – 1999 |
16 | Justin Brayton | 221 | 187 | 34 | 15.38% | 2010 – 2022 |

18 | Jean-Michel Bayle | 67 | 56 | 11 | 16.42% | 1989 – 1992 |

20 | Larry Ward | 224 | 183 | 41 | 18.30% | 1990 – 2003 |
- Seeing Dungey this high is no surprise – the only races he missed in his full-time 450 career was when he broke his collar bone in 2012
- Eli Tomac is sneakily very high on this list. He hasn’t missed many races in his Supercross career (remember were not including 2025). Tomac missed 8 rounds in 2014, but from 2015-2024, he raced 16+ races in all 10 of those seasons. He missed one race in 2018, as well as 2022-2024.
- 2018 was the shoulder contusion in the famous broken pants crash. 2022 was sitting out the final round due to his knee injury suffered at Atlanta (he already clinched the title), 2023 was the crazy achilles injury, and 2024 was the thumb injury.
- A lot of bad luck for Tomac without missing many races.
- Cooper Webb and Ryan Villopoto have missed very few races.
- Didn’t include 2003 and 2004 for Jeremy McGrath as he was officially retired at the time.
- Pretty crazy Chad Reed only missed 13.29% of races in 18 seasons as a full time racer. Chad Reed made 116 consecutive starts from 2003 through 2010 before injury in 2010 – the record for most consecutive starts.
- Reed also made 100% of the starts in 12 different seasons!
