With the 2025 Pro Motocross season now over, we can review who made up the most ground and who lost the most ground over the course of the season. In the results pages now, there is data from where riders crossed the holeshot line! It only took forever for this to happen!
So with that said who gained and lost the most positions in aggregate from the holeshot line over the course of the season?
Well in the 250MX class its going to be obvious…Garrett Marchbanks – his figures for this are absurd. But there are some interesting names to see in both the 450MX and 250MX classes for both positions gained and lost.
450s first:
Most Net Positions Gained in 2025MX from Holeshot Line – 450 Class
This measures the sum of a rider’s position at the holeshot line subtracted by their moto finish in all 22 motos (or motos they competed in).

1 | Lorenzo Locurcio | 120 |
2 | RJ Hampshire | 99 |
3 | Eli Tomac | 97 |
4 | Cameron Anthony Durow | 93 |
5 | Henry Miller | 92 |
6 | Harri Kullas | 90 |
7 | John Short | 81 |

11 | Justin Barcia | 59 |
12 | Jett Lawrence | 57 |
13 | Josh Boaz | 52 |
14 | Dylan Ferrandis | 41 |
15 | Blake Gardner | 38 |
Notes:
- Lorenzo Locurcio comes in first here by a wide margin. Locurcio gained net positions in 18 of 20 motos he competed. Locurcio’s average holeshot position was 22.65 and his moto finish average was 16.65.
- RJ Hampshire comes in second here, the few motos where he lost positions were his best starts on the season.
- Tomac comes in third here which isn’t too surprising. Tomac’s starts have never been his strength. Wish we could compare this historically to Tomac’s other seasons.
- Cameron Durow gained positions in 11 of 13 motos this summer.
- Henry Miller gained positions in 10 of 12 motos this summer. He lost 26 in his two DNFs.
- Malcom Stewart’s starts this year were really bad, in 22 motos, he only had seven starts in the Top 10. And five of those were 10th. Mookie’s numbers would be even higher here if not for his two DNFs at Pala and High Point. He lost 52 net positions in those.
- Justin Barcia and Dylan Ferrandis didn’t compete for most of the year but still came through the pack a lot.
- Despite his great starts, Jett Lawrence gained many positions. Jett only lost net positions in two motos: Millville Moto 1 and Washougal Moto 1. Both races he crashed in.

Rank | Rider | Net Positions Lost |
1 | Brandon Ray | -170 |
2 | Jorge Prado | -115 |
3 | Jeremy Hand | -108 |
4 | Coty Schock | -105 |
5 | Joey Crown | -94 |
6 | Jason Anderson | -75 |
7 | Benoit Paturel | -72 |

12 | Justin Rodbell | -44 |
13 | Max Miller | -40 |
14 | Brad Todd | -37 |
15 | Jack Rogers | -36 |
- There are two high profile factory riders on this list…both on the same team, yikes.
- But surprisingly, it is Brandon Ray who leads this list! Ray competed in 18 motos, he lost net positions in 16 of those. He lost a lot in DNFs. The two motos he didn’t lose net positions? He stayed exactly where he started with a net position gain/loss of 0.
- Okay time for more Prado talk…he lost net positions in 15 of 22 motos. To his credit, his figure is bit skewed by the Thunder Valley Moto 2 DNF – where he lost 34 positions. He only gained net positions in 4 motos, the most being 3 at Hangtown Moto 2. In first motos, Prado lost 41 net positions, in second motos Prado lost -74 net positions.
- Jeremy Hand lost net positions in 12 of 14 motos.
- Unfortunately, for Coty Schock, he ranks pretty highly here because of his great starts this year. Schock had a holeshot line average position of 10.27. His average moto finish was 15.05. A bit skewed by his two DNFs. Schock had two holeshots this year…he lost a net of -54 positions in those.
- Jason Anderson’s figures here are solely due to his DNFs. He lost -91 in his four DNFs. Excluding those, Jason Anderson actually had a net gain of 16 positions.
- Antonio Cairoli lost -35 of net positions in his DNF at Red Bud Moto 2.
- Not the summer of Rodbell this summer unfortunately.
Most Net Positions Gained in 2025MX from Holeshot Line – 250 Class
Okay time to see Marchbanks’ insane figures:
Rank | Rider | Net Positions Gained |
1 | Garrett Marchbanks | 266 |
2 | Dilan Schwartz | 144 |
3 | Jo Shimoda | 109 |
4 | Levi Kitchen | 105 |
5 | Haiden Deegan | 79 |
6 | Max Vohland | 75 |
Ryder DiFrancesco | 75 | |
8 | Drew Adams | 74 |
9 | Austin Forkner | 56 |
10 | Russell Buccheri | 42 |
11 | Avery Long | 41 |
12 | Jace Allred | 38 |
13 | Hamden Hudson | 37 |
14 | Mathys Boisrame | 36 |
15 | Kyle Wise | 35 |
- Marchbanks LOL. Marchbanks’ holeshot position average was 18.18…his moto finish average was 6.09. From the holeshot line, Marchbanks lost net positions in one moto: -1 at Red Bud Moto 2.
- Schwartz gained net positions in 17 of 22 motos. His starts were pretty bad with just two Top 10 positions at the holeshot line.
- Shimoda gained net positions in 19 of 22 motos. His average holeshot position was 7.95…his moto average finish was 3.00.
- Levi Kitchen gained net positions in 17 of 22 motos.
- Deegan comes in fifth here. Deegan actually never lost any net positions in a moto from the holeshot line this summer. In five motos, he finished the same as he started.
- Interesting that four of the top five here are the top 4 in the championship on the season.
Most Net Positions Lost in 2025MX from Holeshot Line – 250 Class
Rank | Rider | Net Positions Lost |
1 | Lance Kobusch | -134 |
2 | Seth Hammaker | -131 |
3 | Jalek Swoll | -113 |
4 | Nate Thrasher | -105 |
Mark Fineis | -105 | |
6 | Tom Vialle | -71 |
7 | Izaih Clark | -65 |
8 | Julien Beaumer | -61 |
9 | Daxton Bennick | -57 |
10 | Alexander Fedortsov | -56 |
11 | Brock Bennett | -54 |
12 | Jack Rogers | -45 |
13 | Gage Linville | -44 |
14 | Brodie Connolly | -39 |
15 | Crockett Myers | -39 |
- Lance Kobusch comes in first for the 250 class for net positions lost. His holeshot average was 17.75…his moto finish average was 26.85. and Kobusch only started 13 motos.
- Seth Hammaker had a few DNFs skewing his results for this. -125 of his position net loss comes from just four motos. Other than those his net loss was just -6.
- Jalek Swoll had just 11 motos this summer. Two of which make up for -72 of his figure. Unfortunately for Jalek, he lost positions in 10 of 11 motos. This one he didn’t? He finished in the same spot he started – net of 0 positions.
- Thrasher’s starts this year were pretty good, however, he lost net positions in 18 of 21 motos. Thrasher holeshotted in the Top 5 in six occasions…he lost a net of -60 positions in those starts.
- Rough year for Mark Fineis, he led 3 laps last year! 9 motos this summer, looks like 7 DNFs. He lost net positions in every moto!
- Tom Vialle had two DNF 40th places which cost him a lot in this metric. Other than those two motos, he actually has a net gain/loss of 0 positions this summer.
- Julien Beaumer lost positions in 13 of 18 motos this summer.
- Daxton Bennick had just 6 motos, but lost positions in 5 of them. Bennick’s holeshot average was 11.83…his moto finish average was 21.33.
I’m really glad we have holeshot data for all 40 riders now, its a shame we can’t compare historically. However, we do have lap position history, but that is something I’ll need to gather. The way they show this now in the results pages is much easier to capture than the way they used to do it. Definitely an offseason project for me.
But I would love to be able to put Marchbanks’ 266 figure into context vs other historical numbers. I imagine that it is probably a record!
