Contingency is important to journeyman privateers as this is part of the yearly income and how they get to the races. If you’re a factory rider these payouts do not apply but to factory supported teams and privateers these payouts are a must to survive. Yamaha pays the most to the top three but as usual Kawasaki comes in clutch to the racers near the back of the pack with night show (top 40) money as well as decent 15-22nd money in the main events. For top the top five places some of these contingency payout sums have gone up over the past couple years but the 15-22nd place riders have seen minimal gains in contingency over the past few years. Manufacturers know that a privateer is most likely not going to win a 250 or a 450 SX Main Event so the top numbers look enticing but 10th through 22nd place earnings is what these privateers need to be looking for to maximize their payouts each weekend. Note that Honda is the ONLY one to not pay the same amount between the 250 and 450 classes. All of the other manufacturers have the same amount of pay between each class. Interesting… Also, after some research, Ducati has a regional contingency program but offers no money to professional SX/MX riders.
Below is the 2026 AMA SX manufacturer contingency payouts. For reference, outdoor motocross is significantly less money but we will break that down in another article. -KK
