Here is the first issue of one the most iconic moto magazines of the 1990s – Inside Motocross. Inside Motocross was the brainchild of AXO Sport America founder Jim Hale and noted motocross photographer Fran Kuhn. Published in 1993, Inside Motocross covered the sport of motocross and Supercross in a whole new way. Instead of focusing on bike tests and race results, Hale’s new magazine centered itself around the personalities in the sport.
Through the use of groundbreaking photography and innovative artistic design, Inside Motocross was able to quickly set itself apart from a crowded field of motocross magazines. Published on ultra-high quality stock and in an over-sized format, Inside Motocross literally looked like no other publication in the sport. More like a high-end coffee table book than a typical motocross magazine, Inside Motocross was different, beautiful and unique.
Over the past couple of months, I have been painstakingly scanning all four of my issues of Inside Motocross. Unfortunately, in order to do this properly, I have had to literally tear each one apart. Due to the large size of the pages, I have also had to scan them in multiple files and then stitch them back together in Photoshop. While hugely time-consuming, I believe this has resulted in the best quality reproduction of the original magazine in all its glory.
In the next few months, I hope to have the other three issues done and we will be uploading them here for everyone to read as well. In addition to the scan of the magazine, I am also embedding a link to a YouTube video I made in a classic commentary style where I go through the magazine page-by-page and add my thoughts and comments on the pictures, ads, and articles contained in issue one.
