  1. Another great review, !I have been wanting this bike for long, to sit next to my CR 500😊Though it competed against KX 500 and YZ 426 offroad and in the desert, it was in a class of its own, the only serious 650cc machine. They command high prices.

Too bad Honda ended production, but at least the XR 650L is still around😃 Though I cant imagine anyone riding one at a motocross track

  2. Great review, Tony, but you didn’t mention the first year issues that 2000 owners had to deal with:

The self-shearing footpeg bolts. I think Honda issued a bulletin on this in 2000.
The “whale snot” factory fork oil that was such a pain to clean out
The self-destructing thermostat and choke flap (both tried to shed hardware and lunch your new motor)
The suddenly leaky countershaft seal (carry a spare and a pick in your tool pouch)
The clutch basket bushing that seizes when it gets too hot. Replace with the updated part ASAP.

Later models fixed most of these issues but, in 2000, they were all new and surprising given the bulletproof history of XRs.

Once uncorked, properly jetted, and the above issues addressed NOTHING consumes open terrain (and rear tires) like a BRP!
