Welcome to Motolytics, outdoors edition! I’ve been doing my best to get back and up my “data scraping” game, and it’s all heading in the right direction. This is what we’ve got for Hangtown.

250 Moto 1

Lots of talk leading into this 250 consisted of things like “Can Zacho carry his momentum into outdoors”, “Can Savatgy shake off the not-so-fairytale ending to his SX season”, “Where will the J and A Mart, AC, and Plessinger guys be?”. Cianciarulo came out to a strong start getting the holeshot and leading for quite a while before eventually succumbing to the force that is Zach Osborne lately. His speed was there, but faded off slowly throughout the moto. Zach was able to keep his fast-avg lap time difference at a 2.2, while AC dropped off a little more to a difference of 2.6. Their fastest laps were within 3/100’s of each other.

The fastest laps of the moto belonged to Aaron Plessinger and Colt Nichols, in that order. They weren’t able to keep that pace all moto, finishing 3rd and 5th respectively.

Positions gained by Austin Forkner from start to finish. His first logged position was 39, he finished 11th. The whole argument about cutting the track to get to the mechanic’s area comes into play here, so do with that what you will.

250 Moto 2

Savatgy would come out swinging in moto 2 with a holeshot and lead for a while, but eventually fall back to 7th to finish. It was the Osborne show once again, getting a second place start and taking the lead early, never looking back.

450 Moto 1

The big story in the 450 class was basically “Can anyone beat Eli Tomac?”. Moto 1 ended with everyone basically conceding to what seemed like the only logical answer at the time: “nope”.

Blake Baggett’s start and finish positions. Highly praised coming into the series, it wasn’t the result most expected, nor the one he probably wanted.

450 Moto 2

Tomac didn’t get a great start in Moto 2 back in 8th. With him winning, his total forward progress was +7, more than anyone in the top 30. Thales Vilardi, who finished 31st, is logged as starting in 39th, bettering Eli’s progress by 1 spot.

The fastest theoretical lap time of the race by Eli Tomac. Runner up in this category was Dean Wilson, with a 2:11.927. Dean also had the 3rd fastest lap of the moto.

Eli Tomac and Marvin Musquin’s average logged positions throughout the entirety of the race. Eli’s average stood out to me since he did in fact end up winning. It basically means he was somewhat slow to move through the pack and didn’t get into the lead until late in the race. I got interested about other race winners who might have a high average position, and none other than Ricky Carmichael in 450 Moto 1 of 2006 tallied an average of 5.6. This was moslty due to how far back he started, so a standard deviation may be a better stat to look for, but fun stuff regardless.

Blake Baggett’s start and finish positions. Again with a rough start, forcing himself to move up through the field.

Dean Wilson’s moto finishes, putting him 4th overall for the day. Compare his total score of 14 to Grant’s of 6, which was good enough for 3rd. 4th through 10th overall are all within 5 points of each other. Seems nobody knew who wanted to be where.
