I am not a huge dirt bike movie buff, but I will watch some moto movies that grab my eye when they get released.
Premix 2 is Donn Maeda’s (from Transworld Motocross Magazine) sequel to the 2015 popular two-stroke cult movie Premix. Premix 2 is an all new 53 minute two-banger flick that features riders Jake Weimer, Davi Millspas, Malcolm Stewart, Chad Reed, Josh Hansen, Wil Hahn, Andrew Short, Phil Nicoletti, Jordan Smith, Axell Hodges, Colt Nichols, Alex Martin, Stilez Robertson and freestyle hotboxing star Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg. My 11 year old son Aden is by far the most interested in these types of films, so we sat down together to give you all a little review on what we thought of Premix 2!
Aden’s favorite part of the whole movie was the opening piece with Adam Cianciarulo. “I like Adam because he has a fun attitude and he seems like he would be exciting to hang out with. I like that he can hold a 125 wide open around Cahuilla Creek MX all day”. Aden is right! That poor KX125! I don’t think the throttle was ever turned off the whole segment! There is something to be said about keeping an 11 year old boy’s attention span for more than 12.6 seconds and Adam’s part did just that for Aden. Or maybe it’s the fact Aden rides a Kawasaki and that he loves Cianciarulo’s pristine Kawasaki KX125? I am not a huge two-stroke guy/fan, but I will have to say it is very cool to watch Adam throw that little green machine around.
For me my favorite part would have to be Jake Weimer on his RM250 at the Suzuki Supercross test track in Corona, California. I come from the two-stroke Supercross days and to me there is nothing like the sound of a crisp 250 two-stroke skimming a set of big whoops. Weimer blipping the throttle in the air over the triple is worth the price of this movie alone. I can still vividly remember walking into Anaheim stadium when I was my sons age and hearing the riders bikes skim across those big set of whoops. Listening to the over-rev of Weimer’s Suzuki as he hit each one gave me tons of goosebumps and a flood of memories. Supercross in the nineties had so many more smells when you walked the pits with all the different types of oils being burned. Today all you smell is the standard one or two fuel burning aromas that we get with today’s four-stroke supercross pit strolls. I miss Camel chics and pre-mix! Oh wait! That’s a t-shirt!
Every scene is good, but those two scenes stood out for Aden and I. I love dirt bikes, period! Having said that, there really are no BAD moto movies to me, but some are slightly less exciting than others. I thought PreMix 2 was well edited and fun to watch. The 53 minutes seem to pass quickly and I was looking for more segments. I like that the riders get excited about something different to film other than the standard edit of them doing laps or hitting the same jump over and over on their four bangers. I also like that you could tell some of these riders had to learn how to ride the two-strokes a little bit. Watch the part with Jordan Smith, Alex Martin, Davi Millsaps and Colt Nichols. You can tell that these two-strokes aren’t easy to ride and they had to get re-acquainted with sizing up some larger jumps at Pala Raceway. Four-strokes have so much torque you can let the bike do the work, but watch these riders techniques as they stretch and move around on the smokers a lot more. Very fun to analyze and view!
I love that they incorporated raw footage, some punk rock and fun clips of all the guys personalities. If you are going to purchase this movie for $12.99 I would recommend downloading it in 1080p. I waited a little longer for that 1080p download life, but to me it was worth seeing every nook and cranny of dirt being moved by these riders. Premix is available on iTunes now. Kudos to Donn and Transworld MX for giving us moto fanatics something to watch for the holidays. It almost makes me want to go buy a two-stroke! Almost!
