My brother Jason is getting all into this vintage stuff and I thought some reviews of things that he’s learned while rebuilding these rat-traps older bikes would be fun. First up is xtremevintageyz.com plastics!

This is part one of many for the Vintage YZ tests from the plush Pulpmx north office. We are working on testing of not one but TWO vintage YZ’s! On the test block are a 1981 YZ 250 and a 1981 YZ 465.
The mission here is to let people know about where to find cool schwag and sweet updates for their vintage ride. I’ve travelled the inter-web and spent countless hours on the phone to set this up and work with some great companies to make this work and give some feedback on their product that are geared towards the vintage mx racer. Thanks for reading this: Jason Matthes
First up is the "make over kit" from x-tremevintageyz.com, located in Woodland Park, Colorado. The owner of this little hop up shop is Scott and he runs a tight ship. Experienced in MX for over 30 years this guy is a diehard mx nut. If you need Jetting, pipes, plastic (more on that later) footpegs or some trick triple clamps for your YZ, Scott is the man. He is also a authorized Race Tech dealer if you need some suspension work.
Our YZ 465 was in sad, sad shape when bought just over a year ago, and after replacing a ton of hard parts it was time to make this beast start to look as good as it now runs. Scott sent up a complete kit to transform this sad looking bike into a legit trick vintage race bike. We received a package that include a gas tank(250 size for better ergos) Yamaha gas cap, tank graphics, opaque side panels and number plates, front and rear fender, seat cover(anti-slip, thank you very much!), and new foam, hooray!

This was packed up and shipped super quick and full of packing stuff and arrived in great shape. Now with vintage plastic I’ve seen some pretty sad stuff along the way (Maier anyone?), and x-tremevintageyz.com is the real deal. The side panels and front number plate have great fitment (you drill the holes yourself), and a nice feel to the texture of them. The tank is Awesome! Man, does a new tank and graphics do wonders for the beat-up 465. The graphics are super thick and vented to prevent bubbling. The air box on the side panel even comes pre-fitted and with trick inserts for extra air flow (like i need more power, god help me). The seat cover is trick with anti-slip on the top and traditional "YAMAHA" printed on the side (lightning bolts for the Hannahs out there are available). The rear fender is a factory Yamaha piece, and the front is a brand that has the glossiest finish ive ever seen . After careful install of the new foam and seat cover, sitting on the YZ is now the way it should be. Stiff, yet good comfort for the guy who gets massive arm pump after two laps needs.

After a couple quick hours the Pulpmx YZ 465 was transformed into something we couldn’t have dreamed of when it first arrived into our garage. It is trick. It looks like a race bike did in 1981. Even better I think, because how accessible where the opaque side panels, number plate, and seat cover back then?
And after. The sweet look of a rebuilt YZ! |
X-tremevintageyz is a great company to deal with and sells really good products that can transform your vintage YZ. A little birdie told me more is coming from them for other brands so watch out for that. When ordering from them they also carry riding gear, tires, chemicals etc, so don’t be shy with the Visa! Check them out HERE.
The old Yamaha look is classic. |
Thanks for reading this review and thanks to my brother my having a website where I can put this stuff.
PS- Scott was heavily involved in the building of Brad Lackey’s Yz 490 for the 1983 USGP, where Brad wore the Number one plate for the one and only time and finished in the top five. From the suspension, to the motor, he had his hands in it, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Everything fit right and looked great. |
