No one really knew much about JMB when he showed up for this race. They would know after though. |
“This was in Phoenix and it was before Anaheim and all the supercrosses. A friend of Roger (DeCoster) made a race in Phoenix and some riders from Honda went there to test the race bike before the first race. Roger told me that I should go to the race also to, you know, get used to supercrosses. It was a real track, just like an AMA race. I was not bound by my contract to go there so I had no mechanic, I had a friend of Roger’s help me as a mechanic. I was in second the whole race but Stanton crashed late in the race and I ended up winning.
I’m wearing Answer gear here, same as what I wore in Europe because my JT contract hadn’t started yet. I’m not sure what the deal was yet, I hadn’t gotten my stuff yet from JT. Mitch Payton helped me a lot and so I wore his jersey. He bought me a bike because Honda didn’t want to help me at all. I brought my factory fork and shock from Europe and Pro Circuit did the motor so it was a mix of people from both sides that were helping me out.
Having won the race, it gave me confidence that I could do well in America.”
