Kyle Regal’s Ride- Should it have gotten more attention?
Matthes: Lost amid the Barcia, Barcia, Barcia hype was the return to racing by Kyle Regal. Regal a very good outdoor motocross rider was on the JSE San Manuel Yamaha team for the supercross season and because that team is sx-only, Regal was on vaca all summer while his contemporaries played in the dirt. It was a curious decision for Regal to sign with a sx-only team seeing as how he’s a top five or six guy many days in motocross but hey, a guys got to get a check and get paid right?
So I imagine that Regal saw his future at San Manuel not being bright and secured a ride with the BBMX crew who’s lone rider this summer, Michael Byrne, isn’t doing as well as anyone would have hoped. Regal showed up at Unadilla on a Suzuki and did pretty well for his first race in a while ending up eighth overall. I don’t really know what’s going on with James Stewart, his team, his bike for next year or anything to do with that situation. Depending on who you listen to, he’s either back next year status quo or he’s going to get on a space ship and fly to Mars to do a Red Bull commercial. Yes, opinions and insider gossip is that far apart.
One thing for sure, Regal’s not coming back to the team next year. We knew it, he knew it and once it was no longer possible to race the four outdoor races that he was supposed to do for JSE (there’s only four to go in the series and there was no plan to show up at Unadilla for JSE), Regal got out of his deal and onto the BBMX Suzuki.
This whole thing was pretty clandestine for sure, there weren’t many leaks out there about Kyle coming back other than I know he was talking to Reed about getting on Reed’s spare bike at one point. Funny enough, one of the teams that was courting Kyle to come back was Valli Yamaha who we all remember had a massive blow-up with Regal and his step-dad a few years ago. Opportunity and speed make for strange bedfellows sometimes.
Anyways, I don’t know what Swizzle is going to say but to me, Regal deserved more hype for his ride at Unadilla.
Swizzle: Absolutely Kyle deserved more attention than he got heading into Unadilla. Literally not a peep about it until Friday morning. Although there was a little hint via everybodies current favorite vehicle of rumor transfer, Twitter. On Thursday, everyone’s favorite Jimmy, “Top” Jimmy Albertson retweeted a tweet from Kyle to Reed adding: “You dont have a hair on your nut if u dont line it up! RT @kyleREGAL: @CRtwotwo should I bring rain boots, Moto boots, or cowboy boots? #30%.
Now I have no idea how tight of a relationship Top Jimmy and Kyle have but reading this really did make me think, “what if Kyle is racing SOMETHING at Unadilla?” I immediately dismissed the thought figuring if he’s gone this long without lining up, chances weren’t good it would change for a typically pulverizing track like Unadilla. Alas, Kyle did make it to Unadilla, far below the radar of much of the sports “pafferazzi”. Interesting too that Kyle didn’t come forth via Twitter or Press Release in the days leading up to Unadilla with any type of public revelation that his sideline sitting was coming to an end. Was their instruction from his recently departed JSE/L&M/San Manuel or whatever the hell it’s being called these days to make his transition from pro-pits to cock-pit as quiet as possible? What would be the point in that? It’s not like Unadilla could come and go with Kyle showing a respectable finish and no one would notice!
Or could it? :-/
I wrote briefly on Kyle’s return in Swizcorner this week with a few questions as to how Kyle may have gotten out of his deal to ride for the Butler Bros for the remaining outdoors rounds. It’s intriguing and I really hope the details come out buts as we’ve unfortunately come to expect with anything related to the Stewart camp, those details may never see daylight. The saving grace may be that Larry Brooks is involved and with his silence coming to an end, hopefully soon, perhaps he can shed some light on the Regal legal’s.
Matthes: Here’s the thing Swizzle with Regal from what I hear from the trenches. There wasn’t any word of Regal’s riding for the BBMX Suzuki team because Yamaha wants to put out a PR that it has released Kyle from his contract first.
Even though he’s on a Suzuki RIGHT NOW.
This is the world we live in and apparently I’m the one taking crazy pills because of what I like to call “having common sense”. See Hahn, Wil/Onstott, Chris or Hansen, Josh/Watson, Kenny which were both situations that I like to think I was using common sense but yet caused chaos in the system. So we didn’t know what was going on but I have heard that the deal was in the works since Millville and like I said, the Regal team had to wait until the terms in the Stewart contract were not met and then they went ahead to get a release. Only it’s not official official.
Let me ask you this Swizzle?
Give me your best case result for Regal this summer, what you have him at if everything works out to the best of plans? I say 4th.
Suck it.
Swizzle: Well, technically if everything works out in a best case scenario, Kyle could win but I digress. I think 4th is an achievable goal and would totally validate his late season addition to the series. Southwick is the great equalizer of the series though, where the podium often see’s a stranger or two to the rest of the series’ podiums. Just maybe…
But wait a second, did you say Yamaha hasn’t even produced a Press Release announcing Regal’s departure? This conversation is over, I don’t want Watson getting all butt-hurt for us discussing unconfirmed(by a piece of paper, even though the Unadilla results are in) information.
