Test #1: Fly Racing F2 Carbon Helmet paired with the Kinetic Mesh-Tech gear set.
June 1st… Summer… HOT. With this type of weather breaching it’s way around the country, it was only right to kick off my very first PulpMX review with one of the most important necessities for any rider, riding gear! Being a true Desert Rat at heart and living in Las Vegas, this test was completed in “cool” summer temps (101 degrees Fahrenheit to be exact). Lucky for us desert folk, we don’t have to deal with the humidity aspect of the sport, just rocks, cactus, silt, and the occasional Jack Rabbit.
Our friends over at Fly Racing (WPS) hit the nail on the head to accommodate our needs of staying cool. Their love package included an Andrew Short replica F2 carbon helmet, and a complete set of their fully vented Kinetic Mesh-Tech riding gear. I know the term “swag” is important for a lot of riders these days, when making sure they look faster than they ride, but for me, function is more important. Fly Racing combines the best of both worlds by making gear that looks great and works even better. Let us take a gander into the details of these said products:
F2 Carbon Helmet: Advanced thermal-cured carbon Kevlar construction. DOT, SNELL, and ECE approved. Multi-port air induction system. Dual density “flow-thru” EPS. Quick release padding with Cool Max liner.
Kinetic Mesh-Tech Pant: Ultra durable mesh panels. Leather knee panels, stitched with Kevlar (also pre-shaped for knee braces). Zipper lock system, with adjustable waist belt. Comfort mesh liner.
Kinetic Mesh-Tech Jersey: 100% mesh panel construction. Tagless and comfort stretch collar. Shorty cuffs with elastic sleeves. Extended tail.
Initial fit was almost spot on… unfortunately for me, I have an odd-sized melon over my shoulders, so the helmet didn’t fit perfectly. Keep in mind most helmets need a few rides to break in and take form. Being impatient, I’m lucky that Fly Racing offers different sized cheek pads to alleviate these problems, which was a huge help. The pant and jersey fit very well and were already comfortable before riding. The pants have ample room for knee braces, and the jersey being 100% mesh was perfect for 100 degree weather. My Pro Lite racing gloves were a bit tight, as they offered no Velcro strap to aid with extra room when putting them on. But, after squeezing your hand through, they fit “like a glove”… (get it??). On the flip side, I know Fly offers several different styles of gloves to accommodate any riders’ demand, with or without Velcro.
After spinning some laps in our local “CNC” compound, there was no denying the performance of the Fly Racing products. The helmet was plenty breathable through the featured exhaust ports, and the Cool Max liner helped keep moisture away. The jersey could not have been better; it was soft, had a great fit, and kept air flowing perfectly. The Kinetic Mesh-Tech pants were very similar, with a superb fit from top to bottom. The mesh panels in front of the thigh and waist area helped to stay cool and comfortable, and the adjustable waistband was vital for some of us that still wear a kidney belt.
Overall, Fly Racing has made huge strides over the last few years. Their gear continues to grab the attention of fans, riders, and professional race teams, and its also great that most of their star riders are within the top 10 during any given weekend. The look, feel, and functionality are top notch, and I’m sure that any rider wearing the new Fly Racing line can agree. Keep your eyes and ears open within the next couple months, because they will once again release some new products that are destined to be favorites for many of us around the country.
