Photos by James Lissimore, captions by Jason Thomas New Alpinestars helmet for Broc, same Airoh for Marv Keefer wondering what he should ask Marvin at the Press Conference. Nate is one of a kind. His social media posts will send you into some sort of introspection wormhole. This is JBone listening to Matthes rant about Justin Hill’s tier status. The legacy of Steve Matthes is something that I never really wondered about but you’re looking at it. MotoGP star Jack Miller shares a moment with Mike Gosselaar during track walk. Chad Reed also pictured. JGR hot doggin through the pits. The metal grates haven’t really been a big topic of conversation this season but they have to play a role. If the start tendencies of the elite riders shifts for 2018, we will have to examine how these grates changed the game. Marvin was glowing before and after the event. Anaheim was completely sold out. I didn’t see an empty seat anywhere. That’s a good sign. The 250 West is deep, bro. We could see a different winner every week. Christian Craig was back to his old self in Anaheim. He will win one before it’s over. He is also preparing to welcome a baby girl to the world so congrats to the Craig family. A bad start kept Joey Savatgy off the podium but don’t be fooled, he is a serious title threat. He has been thisclose to winning the title for the past two years. Look for a win very soon. Freckle was a standout all day. His result wasn’t exactly what he wanted but the speed is definitely there. Most didn’t have him as a title contender but if he figures out the starts, that may change. Also, Freckle is a cool nickname. These two guys really don’t like each other and it shows. They waited about 45 seconds into the new season to start trading paint. This was the best battle of the night and I am not quite sure if you could find a threesome that involves Jason Anderson that has more potential to explode than this one. At least not anything appropriate anyway. Cole Seely started the season with a sixth. I doubt that’s what he had in mind but he got solid points and can move forward. He will need great starts to beat the lead group. J-Mart wasn’t flashy but rode around the top ten all night and gained some race experience before the East coast kicks off. After his troubles last year, just getting through the race without incident is a step forward. With Kenny’s distaste for anything Aldon Baker, you know that these two will have their share of run-ins before long. Kenny is always looking for a fight with that crew. Fifth place for Weston Peick was just what the doctor ordered. Suzuki’s new 450 needed a good showing and walking past the semi after the race, I saw a few Japanese Suzuki staff members with smiles on their faces. A strong off-season seemed to carry Justin Brayton into Anaheim with some nice momentum. He nearly won his Heat race and then backed it up with a solid seventh place finish. Jason Weigandt is still smoking his cigarette after the performance. Transfer of power. Even their photos are touching. All hail, The Donk. Wait, I thought he retired? Did I miss something? Oh, Phil. Where do we begin? No one was more entertaining on Saturday than Phil. Yes, there is a race going on. No, Phil is not in it. Yes, Phil will probably kick my a$$ next weekend. I don’t have anything cool to say about this photo, honestly. Although, I don’t know if I ever see a photo of Christian Craig where his technique isn’t damn near perfect. Justin Hill was very fast but his starts were not. That’s the glaring hole in his game right now. Poor A-Mart. I am not sure if it was some sort of psychological connection with Phil’s tough night but Alex Martin didn’t have the Anaheim he wanted at all. It beats being ejected by Christian Craig, though. Sugar Shane was fantastic last Saturday. He will be tough to beat if that’s the form he brings every weekend. What in the world is ARay doing on the far right? Adam Enticknap put in a ton of work this off-season. It paid off with an A1 spot in the main event. Qualifying for A1 is a rite of passage for any privateer. Chad Reed got 15th but his look was solid as usual. This is a tough deal for everyone involved. Motocross pants are not designed to stand up to a rear tire and this happening on live television is brutal. Broc Tickle was solid but not on the level I expected from him. I think it’s still coming, though. Berluti is telling Brayton his laptime and how far behind he is. Broc Tickle’s mechanic has a different opinion of the situation. Also, that guy in the Yamaha shirt is staring at me. David Vuillemin wins A1 and celebrates with a heel clicker! Wait, I mean Marv. Eli Tomac will need to make this a rare occurrence moving forward.
