Who has the most consecutive starts in Pro Motocross history?
I will break down the Top 20 in both the 250MX and 450MX Classes, as well as the active leaders.
Quick Note: I am referring to the two Pro Motocross classes as just the 250MX and 450MX classes. Obviously in the past they were not called this and didn’t even race 450s at one point. But for ease of reading I am just going to refer to them via their current names throughout this article.
450 Motocross Class Most Consecutive Starts
Rank | Rider | Consecutive Starts | Time Period |
1 | Larry Ward | 85 | 1994 – 2000 |
2 | Eli Tomac | 81 | 2016 – 2022 |
3 | Mike LaRocco | 75 | 1996 – 2002 |
Ryan Dungey | 75 | 2010 – 2016 | |
5 | Marvin Musquin | 66 | 2016 – 2021 |
Tim Ferry | 66 | 1999 – 2004 | |
7 | Ricky Carmichael | 64 | 2002 – 2007 |
8 | Kevin Windham | 59 | 2003 – 2007 |
9 | John Dowd | 58 | 1999 – 2003 |
10 | Andrew Short | 57 | 2007 – 2011 |
11 | David Vuillemin | 56 | 2002 – 2007 |
12 | Jeremy McGrath | 51 | 1994 – 1998 |
13 | Nick Wey | 49 | 2008 – 2012 |
14 | Jeff Emig | 48 | 1995 – 1998 |
15 | Michael Byrne | 46 | 2006 – 2010 |
16 | Robbie Reynard | 46 | 1999 – 2002 |
17 | Greg Albertyn | 44 | 1997 – 2000 |
18 | Jeff Hicks | 43 | 1983 – 1988 |
19 | Jeff Ward | 42 | 1985 – 1991 |
20 | Jake Weimer | 40 | 2011 – 2014 |
Notes
- Larry Ward leads the way here. The only reason his streak ended at the end of 2000 is that Ward raced the 250 class in 2001 and 2002. In fact, if you looked at both the 250 and 450 Class and combined consecutive starts…Larry Ward would have 149 consecutive Outdoor starts from 1991-2003!
- For reference that is more races than any individual rider has ever raced in the 450MX class (John Dowd with 144).
- Eli Tomac is second here without missing a round from 2016-2022, where he finished 2-1-1-1-3-2-1 in the championship in those years.
- No surprise to see LaRocco high on this list.
- Ryan Dungey consecutive race streak goes from his class debut until his neck injury in 2016.
- Tim Ferry’s streak ended at Kenworthy’s in 2004. When he returned, he then went on to have another consecutive streak of 35 races.
- Ricky Carmichael’s original streak of races when he entered the Premier Class ended at 23 due to dropping down to the 250MX class at the final round of 2001. He did this to go for the overall win record in the 250MX class at the time. Had Carmichael not dropped down and kept racing in the 450 Class, he would have had a consecutive race streak of 87!
- Kevin Windham had a streak of 36 starts at the end of 2001 and then briefly retired in 2002. Had Windham raced all 12 rounds in 2002 and kept the streak going as he did afterwards, Windham would have had a consecutive race streak of 107!
- John Dowd’s streak of 58 races came from ages 33-37!
- After Jeremy McGrath’s streak ended after 1998, he raced a total of 4 more Outdoor races in his career.
- Robbie Reynard started his 450MX career with a streak of 46, he never had a streak of more than 9 after that.

Notes
- Justin Coooper and Brock Sellards lead the way here at 63.
- Jeff Ward never missed a race in his time in the 250MX class.
- Ernesto Fonseca never missed a 250MX race during his time in the class.
- Jeff Ward, Marvin Musquin, Tim Ferry, Jake Weimer and Jeff Emig are in the Top 20 in both the 250MX and 450MX classes.
- There are more examples of high consecutive streaks from the 1980s compared to the 450MX class due to the fact the in the late 1980s to early 1990s the 250MX class (125MX class at the time) raced all year. Whereas, the 450MX Class (250MX at the time) and 500MX class split the season.
