All my life I’ve wanted a Troy Lee painted helmet, I’m old enough to have wanted this when Troy Lee himself actually painted all the helmets that came in also! So with me teaming up with TLD for the Blair Matthes Show, I approached them about doing up a FLY helmet for me because, hey, we’re partners now right! Thanks to Jenna Hewitt and Mark Wilson down there, we made it happen not too mention FLY Racing for shipping me a brand new Formula helmet to give to Troy Lee.

Mark asked me for inspiration so I quickly worked the Google and most of the ones I liked over the years belonged to guys from the ’80’s. I prefer the straight lines, solid colors and a “clean” look. You may like the flying eyeballs and splash colors everywhere but that’s not for me Dawg. I’m riding a white/red Yamaha but I know in 2027, I’ll have a blue Yamaha so I wanted to make sure that in a year from now, I’ve got a helmet with some blue in it. Pulpmx logos obvi. We went back and forth a couple of times off a drawing they sent me, I changed the numbers on the side a bit, the original ask was “Matthes” on the back but as Keefer mentioned, my jersey will have Matthes on it also so switch to Steve. We needed to have FLY on the chin bar because they’re a huge part of everything we do here and also, they gave me the helmet so, like, duh. And to be honest the solid gold flake numbers on the side were never approved by me, LOL, it just showed up like that which is fine. I like it. I also insisted the “Troy Lee Designs” on the visor be the old school pink/blue coloring also.
So it turned up and I love it, the 18-year old Steve Matthes would’ve died for this. So cool to be in the position I am to be able to get something like this. So people, don’t forget that TLD yes makes great gear, helmets and MTB stuff but they’re also still designing and painting helmets- just like they always did! Thanks Troy Lee Designs!
