Haiden Deegan clinched the 2026 250 West Supercross title with two rounds to go. Pretty impressive for a 10 round series.
In the 450 Class, Hunter Lawrence has opened a bit of a gap with four rounds to go and has the momentum. I think the 450 class will still go down to the wire, or at least it mathematically will.
So, how often do Supercross titles get mathematically clinched early? And a key distinction is mathematically. Often times, the points leader has like a 17 or so point lead going into the finale and it is pretty much over. However, we are just looking at when titles get mathematically clinched early.
Before we jump in, I am only counting 450SX seasons with 10+ rounds and 250SX seasons with 6+ rounds.
450 Class
With only counting seasons with 10+ rounds, we have 1977 through 2025 to look at, 49 seasons.
Final Round
The title has been settled in the final round 21 times. The last 10 seasons, 2016-2025, the series has been mathematically settled in the final round 8/10 times. This does include 2023 where Chase Sexton was up 7 points going into the final round and the only rider who could catch him was Eli Tomac, who was injured. However, Sexton technically wasn’t mathematically the champion yet. There is another example of this I’ll cover later.
The longest streak of titles going to the final round is just 5, from 2017-2021. In fact, there are only two other streaks of just 3 years: 1983-1985 and 2023-2025.
One Round to Go
The Supercross title has been mathematically clinched with one round to go 17 times.
Two Rounds to Go
The Supercross title has been mathematically clinched with two rounds to go 7 times.
Ryan Dungey in 2010 mathematically clinched his title with two rounds to go, however, he essentially unofficially clinched with three rounds to go when Ryan Villopoto went down with injury.

Riders to clinch with three to go:
- 1999 – Jeremy McGrath
- 2015 – Ryan Dungey

The Supercross title has been mathematically clinched with four rounds to go 2 times.

250 Class
With only counting seasons with 6+ rounds, we have 1977 through 2026 (I am including 250W this year as Deegan has already clinched, however, I am not including the east obviously) to look at, 81 seasons.
