This week The Swiz and I talk about if anyone else is going to win a race this year.
Can anyone else win a race this year besides the two guys?
Matthes- Well so far we’ve seen two winners in four races in the supercross series and there isn’t much there to make me think that anyone but James Stewart or Ryan Villopoto will win a race this year. Of course if one of them gets hurt (which is easy to do in this sport) all bets are off but so far, RV and JS have shown that they are better than anyone else out there.
Every single race this year, those two have had the top two fastest lap times in the main event with this weekend being so far ahead, no one was even in the same second. They have both shown the ability to come through the pack with ease (James passed Ryan Dungey twice in LA!) and look to be the two point men for this title. And don’t get me wrong Swiz, I’m not complaining as we’ve seen some bad ass two man battles this year.
Swiz- One thing we have seen year after year, yet some still choose to be silly doubters, is that Chad Reed will figure it out and be there in the end(season ending injuries not withstanding). Reedy just had his first podium of the year, a last second thrust to 2nd place no less; we haven’t seen his best for sure and that says something for the coming rounds.
Reedy wouldn’t be my first guess for our 3rd winner of the season though, for that bet, I’m placing my cheddar on Ice Trey. That’s right Mr. Opening Ceremonies of the new millennium. Red Dog’s coming back to the ranch and I’ll let you imagine TC41’s exuberance and subsequent dominance resulting from his giddiness. Trey continues to impress and much like Rocky, comes back from a dismal performance with a fight for the ages. A2? Just maybe.
After Dungey’s last corner brain shart in Oakland, I’m betting he is studying his RC supplied SX notebook to ensure that doesn’t happen again. He gets better as season’s progress and that could easily amount to a win before the checkers in Vegas.
Just to certify I’m no ball licker of those who have shown well already, a few others who wouldn’t shock me to see win; Grant, Windham and wait for it… Stroupe-That’s right, kid is like lightning. Unpredictable and has crazy skills.
One thing is certain, I’m in the driver’s seat on this debate while you, Mr. PulpMX are fishtailing into the median with your cockamamy belief that no new winners will surface this season.
Matthes- Some good points in there for sure although I picked up the phone and called you in for a 5150 when you said Stroupe can win a race. Austin’s got some serious skills for sure but he’s got about as much chance to go a strong twenty laps as I do. Look, part of this column is that one of us has to take a side that we may not believe in but do it because we would like to think a subject makes for a good debate. I just think that the two amigos that have dominated this year will keep dominating the rest of the year because that’s what we’ve seen in the past. Rick Johnson/Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson/David Bailey, Jeff Stanton/Damon Bradshaw, Jeremy McGrath/Jeff Emig, Jeremy McGrath/Ezra Lusk, Ricky Carmichael/Chad Reed, Chad Reed/James Stewart, Ryan Dungey/Ryan Villopoto. Can you sense a trend here Swiz? We always have two man battles!
Can someone win a race? Yeah, it could happen (Nathan Ramsey won a race for petes sake!) but it will be a total fluke and in no way will the dude holeshot and run away with it. That’s not going to happen so I again state that no one will win a race this year other than RV and James and if they do, it will be because one guy got hurt or both guys take each other out. I can’t see any combination of both of them getting a bad start and not being able to make it to the front.
Swiz- That’s the easy way out. James and RV are both clearly the two guys most willing to pin it, push it and exclaim it. There are always spoilers and this year the field has more competitors with a shot at pouncing on a Bubba or RV mishap than ever. And that little hypothetical of Stewart and RV taking one another out, Im putting those odds at 50/50 leaning toward highly likely. Intentional or otherwise.
What do you guys think?
