Swiz: Thanks for taking the time. First I’d like to ask how your view on Covid19 has changed from first learning of it’s possible threat, to now after seeing the measures applied to thwart it?
Nick: Well I have always been cautious about about my hygiene in public places and especially planes. I was well stocked up on antibacterial wipes pre Covid19. When I was racing I got extremely sick a few years in a row with all of the travel and weakened immune system from, most likely, to much training..
You’ve lived in Cali a long time now so this may be a dumb question but when something serious like this goes down, does it make you long to be back Michigan at all? Does it make you kind of ponder what feels like “home” most?
We are in contact with our family at home in DeWitt often but people in California are definitely much less conservative. We are doing our best to be responsible.
From what you see in your own neighborhood, do you feel like people are being as responsible as you and taking it seriously?
My neighbors are taking the distancing very seriously. We haven’t seen the few families that live near us even out of the house. I have seen a lot of families out exercising though. Honestly it’s nice to see so many people active. California just made a face mask in public mandatory so that has been a bit of a shock to see so many people in masks. Seems responsible though.
You are a guy who likes to keep busy, the executive orders have really imposed a situation where you’re sole focus is on everything under your roof. It seems like that would make you stir crazy but I have found it to be super rewarding to see what your family can come up with as a group to busy yourselves as a unit. Is that true for you too? Kind of a blessing in disguise?
Well we are definitely taking the 6 feet route and limiting our interactions. We have been spending a lot of time outside and I have been doing a lot of training with McAdoo. He is the one person I have been spending time with. Trying to be responsible but their is plenty of work to be done. I have a home gym so we have been spending a lot of time in there.
Do you have any preference on how the racing calendar resumes when that time comes? Are you against doubleheaders? Does running the MX series before finishing SX rub you wrong at all?
I hope everyone gets a deeper appreciation for the events we do have. So many people talk about how this or that could be so much better, but we would be so happy to get back to the series we had 6 weeks ago or last summer. Hopefully the teams and riders open up and relay some of these ideas to cooperate with the promoters a bit more.
Very true, one universal truth is that everyone involved with the sport really does have a greater appreciation for it. So McAdoo is back riding and we’ve seen a clip or two of AC riding again right?
Adam has been riding a couple of times a week and Cameron has been 2-3 times a week depending on private rental to ride here in CA.
We are trying to address some area that need improvement with training and the specific riding right now as we are still a ways out from the start of the Nationals.
The clip I saw of Adam had me shaking my head. I was watching thinking to myself, “how can this guy lose?” He looks so good on the bike. It’s incredible how well he transitioned and how comfortable he looks.
Adam is riding well and the team has a lot of people that have the same goals. The competition is really tough though. Their is a lot of focus on improving in all areas in this time off.
Very true, the field is incredible and the progression never ends.
Thanks a ton for the time Nick, great to hear you and your area are committed to being part of the solution. Be safe and see you at Red Bud!
Wish you and your family the best Kevin!
