Here’s what you listened to in 2015.
We did a column a week ago or so on the Top Ten Most Download Steve Matthes Shows right HERE and was hoping to get this column right after that. However Moser got busy or had a power outage or something and it took some time. But better late than never!– Matthes
Here is a “short” look at the 10 most downloaded PulpMX shows of 2015. What makes a great PulpMX show? It’s a matter of opinion but I wood say the interaction between the guests is the key. In studio or on the phone, if the guests are comfortable with each other the conversation takes on less of an interview format and more of a casual bench racing session. When the dialogue takes on a life of its own people seem to forget they are on an internet radio show and we get a glimpse into the sport that no other media outlet or format can provide. With that being said this year there wasn’t a standout show this year like “Laser Gate”. The top ten downloads were all within a couple thousand and after reviewing them all I didn’t see any particular rhyme or reason of why they are listed. Just works out that way I guess.

Show #228 – DV in studio, guests Reed and Cooper Webb
Anytime you get DV and Reed on the show together you get some great stories about the old days as Yamaha teammates. Reed talks about selling off the team and even his motorhome. Steve hints that Reed will be riding for Yamaha but Reed says nothing is final, ironically now only a week away from A1, still nothing seems final. Cooper talks about his MXDN experience and the weird French starting gates. After discussing the offseason races Cooper plans on doing Steve takes great pleasure informing him that his nemesis French rider Febvre will also be racing them. Steve goes on a rant about the public urinals that are everywhere in France.

Show #221 – Keefer in studio, guests Plessinger, GL, Travis Preston, Mike Williamson.
Over the past year Keefer has done a great job filling the void left by co-hosts Watson and Mad Dog, and he also does a great job of making me look way less creepy. Plessinger came on the show to talk about his breakout Washougal ride in the mud. Langston talked about how important the mental side of the sport is and how a jump in confidence has helped Barcia’s results. Steve brings up how Langston created an “uproar” (pun intended) on Instagram for posting about sport animal killing. Preston busts Steve’s balls about just about everything from his lack of wrenching abilities to his lack of riding moto and mountain bikes. With Preston and Keefer both from the high dez they always make for a good combo on the show. Williamson talks about his last season with RV and what he thinks went wrong in the GP’s. Steve reminds Williamson he taught him everything he knows about wrenching. Hello, hello, Pookie also jumps on to talk about attending Washougal.
Keefer and Preston describe having a nice long conversation on the drive to the show. We learn that Keefer really wants to know how Preston thinks his corner speed looks or more importantly how Preston thinks he looks while cornering. The always-entertaining 7 Deuce Deuce fills us in on the latest TPJ news and how stacked the current 450 SX class is. Some said he would never race in America again yet here he is still winning SX main events, Reed talks about notching another race win into his belt. Kiniry tells us about the transition from 450SX to 250 arenacross. Why do they call him Bob Gnarly, well he ran into a bulldozer on the side of the track in AX and immediately rejoined the race, that’s the definition of gnarly. You know who else is gnarly? Weston Peick. Peick talks about his injury to his foot and how a couple screws holding his foot together shouldn’t keep him off the track too long.

Show #211 – Weimer in studio, guests AC and Hanny
Weimer provides lots of insight into racing past, present and future. He talks about his current injuries and that he’s not quite ready to hang up his boots, he has some unfinished business. Steve asks if he can retire and Weimer says although he doesn’t need to run out and get a job today he’s also not set for life. Weimer talks about his time training with Aldon, RV and AC and the decision to move on and go a different direction. AC is always a good interview and never misses an opportunity to ask how Pookie is doing. The odd couple Hanny and Steve talk about how his return to SX is going and how Steve has slacked off as his manager.

Show #224 – Keefer in studio, guests Ping, Jeremy Martin, Ferry, Langston.
Ping cancels on coming in studio yet again, some excuse about the entire state of California is on fire or something. Martin says it’s true what they say winning your second championship is harder than your first. Keefer asks Martin if he’s going to treat himself to anything fun with his championship bonus, Martin says maybe an RC car but probably just going to put all the money in the bank. Steve gets creepy with Ferry about his Legends race and Ferry talks about his new role as a mini dad. Langston explains the balancing act of announcing to viewers with no knowledge of moto and hardcore moto fans. Keefer tries to explain his “Attention single guy’s only give your lady 80% in the bedroom” tweet.
#6
Show #206 – Berluti in studio, guests Brayton, Emig, Windham, and Tortelli.
Berluti, Berluti, no longer a mechanic for Suzuki but always a great host. Windham and Emig come on the show to discuss about the increasing concerns about injuries in the sport and that something needs to be done to make is safer. The need for a riders union is discussed again. Justin Brayton quietly broke his back prior to the season but is back on the race track and getting back up to speed. Shockingly Brayton is really nice on the phone. We finally get Berluti and Tortelli on the phone to talk about their time together as a super team. Steve tries to get the recipe for Tortelli’s tiramisu.
#7
Show #218 – Watson & Mumbles in studio, guests Reed and Webb.
Possibly the best in-studio guest duo, Watson and Coy Gibbs come on the show. They Jab Jab back and forth about who has better sponsors and riders. Reed calls in to explain his shoulder injury and the tough decision to close up his Two-Two Motorsports race team. Cool as crap Cooper Webb comes back from his ankle injury and hits the ground running instantly running up front and letting a couple race wins at Red Bud slip away.
#8
Show #207 – DV and Antonovich in studio, guests Lamay, Schmidt, Rusk, Candy Man in studio.
The all privateer show turned into an epic DV rant. Poor Ronnie Stewart couldn’t get a word in edgewise as DV questioned why any privateer is out there racing for basically free. This was an all DV show as even Antonovich from TWMX couldn’t get a word in and he was in studio. We all learned that DV feels very strongly that racing SX as a career is not worth the risk unless you get paid and in short privateers don’t get paid.
#9
Show #216 – Keefer in studio, guests RJ Hampshire, Noren and Aldon Baker
Keefer talks about his Canadian racing experience and the struggle to get laid in a motorhome. RJ Hampshire talks about coming up Just Short of a win at High Point. Team Honda apparently has “Factory” Freddy Noren on speed dial and has called him to fill in again this season. Aldon Baker talks about what he’s got cooking at the Bakers factory and the lack of Strava Steve mountain biking uploads.
#10
Show #223 – Watson, Holley, Blair and Hobo in studio, guests Dungey, and Steinke,
One of the best in studio guests line up of 2015. Watson and Holley bench race about the past and Holley’s ability to make out with any podium girl. Blair can’t quit racing or music and explains his love/hate relationship with both. Dungey talks about winning another outdoor championship and dispels all rumors about him dropping down to the 250 class to help out Marvin.
