There’s plenty of riding videos online, we try to laugh at ourselves and the sport’s cliche’s when we roll film.

Being an off-week we decided to poke our heads into the PulpMX YouTube channel and focus in on a few of our favorite videos. Some simple explanations of what we liked about them, our aim in creating them or behind the scenes facts about what it took to assemble them are included.
(Matthes note: We’ve got almost a million views of our videos on the Pulpmx YouTube channel and I have to say, that’s pretty cool. We’ve tried to do something different than the usual “punk rock music/riders jumping/fast cuts” type of stuff and make people laugh. And I think we’ve done that with a few different videos. And the Pulpmx Show Show-Pro’s are a cool idea and gives our listeners an idea of what’s going on behind the audio stream.
Thanks to Swizcore, Lissimore and Teen Wolf for all the help in producing/filming/creating these videos and it’s scary that my 1988 video from Saskatoon where I beat Blair Morgan has over 5K views. It’s worth it to watch it just for the announcers alone.
The Andrew Short Bercy Superpole video is pretty cool because I’ve never seen a GoPro camera from that race and it’s pretty unique because of the tunnels. And the promoters don’t allow unauthorized GoPro cams at the race so Andrew and I had to do it on the down-low. And it turned out pretty good and gave a viewer the idea of what it’s like to race the iconic Bercy SX.
:
And also, here’s a video that’s not on our YouTube but it’s buried deep in the Racer X vids. We made it when I was in Florida while Ferry was hurt and not racing. Matt Ware filmed and edited it and we had a very fun time making it. I got some gear from O’Neal and we planned this whole thing about how he was coming back from injury. The scene where I was running behind Matt sitting in a Yamaha Ryno was filmed a few times because I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s a little treasure that’s a few years old but still pretty funny.
And oh yeah, thanks to BTOSports and Maxima for giving us the funding to do some of these videos!)
Ok, thanks boss. now it’s our very own T.Blaze goes first, followed by myself.
Blaze- When the subject of PulpMX comes up among my moto friends, the topic invariably turns to the radio show Matthes and the boys put on most every Monday night. Quite honestly, it is not hard to see why. The PulpMX show is consistently insightful, often controversial and always entertaining. Because of this, it has become a virtual addiction to those of us who crave all things moto.
While the radio show is certainly the highest profile of the PulpMX properties, it is far from the only thing offered by Matthes’ moto empire. On the web site you can find everything from race analysis, to classic bike reviews, to the ramblings of a retired Frenchman. We strive to put a little bit of everything up for people to enjoy, and hopefully in that, we succeed.
In addition to the radio show and web site, PulpMX industries includes a channel on YouTube that houses some of the funniest motocross related content on the Internet. Ever want to see what the Lion’s Den looks like during the show? Then check out “Inside the PulpMX Show” for a great view of the boys making the magic happen. Are you into grown men with sleeveless tees, hamburger tats and flatbill lids? Then check out the “PulpMX ShowPro” and “Watson Unplugged” for a look inside the mind (if you dare) of the man who made Gigi a household name. Have a hunger for 6’2” mini pilots trying to break poor innocent KX80’s in half? Then check out “Matthes vs. Morgan- A Savage Saskatoon Slaughter” for a look at a grown man picking on a poor unsuspecting snowmobile pilot.
Some of my personal favorites include –
Adam Cianciarulo REALLY loves Maxima Oils
Where the kid who would be King introduces us to the joys of primping with Maxima SC1 Clear Coat and gargling with Castor 927. The Dogger must be proud.
Small Man, Big Heart
Where a certain German Supercross champion endures a relentless pummeling, only to fight back bigger, stronger and more fauxhawkier than before. As a bonus, you get to see CR22 pull his best Burgess Meredith and JT$ conquer mount Titicaca. Absolute comic gold my friends.
(Swiss note: I chose this too, so I included the video below in my section)
Top Jimmy Shadow
Where we spend a day getting to know Jimmy Albertson and his love of the “F” word, Budweiser and the smooth taste of an unfiltered Camel. Is it any wonder Georgia Lindsey swam across the Atlantic to be with this guy?
Any and every “Bottom Line Show”
Where you get to see Matthes hide in trash cans, negotiate contracts, and stalk Timmy Ferry. Every one of these babies is comic gold and I really miss them. Damn you MX Sports and your one-day schedule! Even the music is groovy and it is super cool to see everyone getting in the spirit and having a good time. They are all a few years old at this point, but they really hold up. If you haven’t seen them before, then you are missing out, but even if you have, they bear a re-watch for sure. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
Here is the link to last weeks story highlighting the Bottom Line Show Series.
Swiss- I opted to focus on my three favorite videos and a little of the behind the scenes guts that was involved in producing them. Let’s get right to them.
RV/AC 2012 Outdoor Prep
If there’s one thing we can all agree on about social media, the internet and online communities, it’s(well, it’s that people online are far more douchey than when face to face) that you can’t predict the popularity of a video. The ability for any video exists to go “viral” and while there’s somewhere near a snowball’s chance in hell that a motocross-based video would ever actually go viral, this was as close to viral as a PulpMX video has ever gotten. One thing that gives a video a leg-up in the popularity department is rabidly-supportive fans of subject matter and this video had that going for it in a few ways. Oddly, it wasn’t the current-fastest man in the sport, Ryan Villopoto, which made this video such a hit, it was the inclusion of Adam Cianciarulo, one of the top-five all-time most anticipated amateurs, soon to be turning pro; and the most important factor, he was on a 2-stroke. Phenom prodigies or proven champion racers will always draw eyeballs but they will never compare to the insane 2-stroke fan-base. Kick your boots off and enjoy this, the most popular PulpMX video ever produced. It’s solid but in my opinion doesn’t hold a candle to my 2nd and 3rd selections below. Also stoked to use my buddies band for the killer soundtrack of this video.
One Man’s Fight
This was the first video I made during my first Florida trip and I’m pretty stoked on how it turned out. We touched at the heart-strings of the 2-stroke fanatics right out of the gate, it has a JT$ cameo and of course Carl, “the crazy French-Canadian riding coach”. I remember Matthes, Timmy and I sitting at Timmy’s(watching American Idol, drinking Starbucks of course) spitballing ideas we thought would work and the thing that got us all super excited to get started was throwing in the JT/Stew flashback, the 2-stroke and definitely, Crazy Carl. Luckily the one part that was out of our hands, Carl, worked out as he was available on our day to shoot. I remember being caught off guard with Matthes’ shooting style. I come from a design school where you want painfully fleshed out concepts, well-planned shots and grabbed multiple takes to assure a solid result. Matthes is definitely more of a shoot from the hip “artist” who prefers a natural flow and spontaneity. It took me a bit to adapt to this method of operation but I went with it and it really hasn’t bitten us yet.
Small Man, Big Heart
Concepts based on humor, simplicity and familiarity are what make perfect examples of what PulpMX videography is all about. It’s what our dedicated supporters expect and stick around for. Small Man, Big Heart was a concept we had texted about a few times and the day before we shot it, JT, Matthes and I decided it was “go-time” for this concept. We nailed down which parts of the Rocky 4 training montage we wanted to mimic and how we could get our biggest laughs in a small footprint, no pun intended. This whole shoot went as smoothly as you could possibly imagine. It was pretty much all done in one take. This may be because we were laughing at each shot so much that we just knew it was gonna be what we aimed for. JT was born to play this part and he came with a lifetime of preparation… and nailed it. In my opinion, if you aren’t a fan of this video, you can’t consider yourself a fan of PulpMX. This is what we are all about.
