This past Monday night we had FMX legend Colin “Scummy” Morrison on to talk about how he’s helping out some privateers on the west coast. Co-owner of SKVI , Morrison’s a fan of racing and wanted to help some dudes out. And there’s a Pulpmx Show tie-in to that as well.
Here’s an excerpt of his interview:
Scummy: We did this in 2015 on a shoestring budget. We had Adam and Tyler on. I got my underwear company, Skvi. My partner has that big trailer we’re pulling with. We’re like, I’ve always been a big supercross fan and I think it’s a complete joke what these poor guys make. The top 20 dudes, they’re making good money, but all these other guys, it’s a complete nightmare. Just for them having to pay to race supercross, coming in 20th place if you make the night show. Make a thousand bucks, a couple thousand bucks. I just felt so bad for these guys. So 2015 we did it. Helped out Adam and Tyler (Enticknap) and got them to the race. So that first year, really under the radar and whatever.
We skipped two more years. I got all my sponsors. I rounded up some money. Skvi started doing a lot better, so we had some marketing dollars. I told my partner. Let’s try and do the supercross team a little bit bigger. I know it’s kind of smoke and mirrors from the outside. We don’t got much race parts or anything, but we got the rig. We’re supplying race gas for the guys, flying the guys out, paying their race entries. Just trying to do whatever we can do to help.
It’s a great deal. These guys don’t have much, so you’re giving them something. Like you said, it’s not a full factory ride, but it’s the best that you can do at the time. I’m sure these guys really appreciate it. I think more people like you are needed in the sport. Where can they go to support your company that supports privateers?
Maybe just to Skvi Official on Instagram. We’re trying really hard to get that going. I want to do this again next year. Once again, I just want to help these guys out. I think a lot of people that watch the sport, they don’t really see the ins and outs and what these guys have to do to get to every race. It’s gnarly. The gnarliest dudes in the sport are these guys and it’s hard for them to make it to the race. So if I can do whatever I can do to help these guys a little bit more, it’s so much fun. It’s a lot of work because we don’t have a lot of guys working for the team. Last week it was me and one other guy setting up the rig. But we’re doing everything I can do so the riders just have to worry about the riding, and we can somewhat handle the rest. It’s going good so far. Skvi.com is the website.
That’s great, man. Maybe our listeners will go in and support you a little bit.
The Alex Nagy thing, I hit you up in Instagram. That was classic. I heard that podcast you did with Ray and Alex and heard this guy was sleeping in his car. I was like, what the hell? So, I hit him up on Instagram. He was really pumped. We got him on the rig. That guy is so gnarly. I’ve got so much respect for him. The last round, the poor guy was sleeping in his car, I found out. I said, “Listen, man, I’m here to help. I will get you a room, whatever you want.” He’s like, “Dude, I don’t even want to ask you. It’s cool. I’ll sleep in my car.” I’m like, “Listen. I will get you a hotel room.” He’s like, “No, no. I’m just going to sleep in my car.” That kid is punk rock, man. He’s just a good, solid guy. Him and his dad.
This Alex Nagy guy, he lived in his van for like a month. He’s had a hammock in his van. Him and his buddy slept in it. They showered once a week. He rode at Milestone every day. He had to wrap his race gas can in a garbage bag so it didn’t smell so bad so they wouldn’t die. Then at Houston him and his dad slept in the rental car at the stadium.
Nagy is rad, man. Him and his dad, they’re such good guys. Like I said, he turned down a hotel room just because he was afraid to ask. I would pay out of my pocket just to try and help this guy. He’s just a genuine, nice guy, and same thing with Colton. I’m in the 805, the racer’s edge. I’ve known Jason for 20 years. That’s Colton’s nephew. The Deuce Deuce, Tyler. Just a good group of guys. We have a good time.
Can you believe how popular the Seven Deuce Deuce is with these fans?
I think because he’s just a genuine guy. He’s not trying to put up no front. He’s just a real dude. I don’t think there’s enough guys in the sport like that. He just says what he really is. He’s a good dude. I really like him.
It’s a great thing you’re doing. I love that you heard the show with Nagy that we did and then you were like, “I got to help that guy.” That’s awesome. That just says a lot.
Yeah, it works out. Everything right now is working out. I think you already know. I talked to Keefer. Got sober six years ago…I was tired of doing the whole drug addiction thing. It feels like once you get your life straightened up and get sober anything’s possible. Just for me to be able to do this, six years ago there’s no way I would have ever have thought I could do something like this. Everything’s working out good in my life. I’m just honored that I can help these guys in any way. It’s really cool.
