It’s that time of year again. The time where I REALLY work for this exorbitant PulpMX salary.

There are things in life that you don’t enjoy doing. Lots of them, come to think of it; and the PulpMX Show Year in Review is no stranger to that list. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather pull 20 to 30 clips out of 35 shows per year than say, have a colonoscopy but only marginally. Pulling the clips really isn’t even the worst part, though it was the first year and even the second year was a real bear but this is my fourth trip to this rodeo wrapped in a bear wrestling, snake wrangling torture chamber, and it’s gotten a little less painful each year. No, the worst part is bookmarking each show and that is why I had to outsource half of the shows to a man who really is the only guy on earth capable of fulfilling such duties…. yeah, I said doodie. Clearly I’m referring to the creepiest PulpMX fan and employee of you all, Cory Moser.
I’m sure you can imagine the heartache endured for me as mentor, attempting to mold my usually drunk protege into a reliable and punctual bi-weekly performer. The punctual part is of utmost importance. It takes no time at all to forget to bookmark one show and before you know it, you’re 3 shows behind and it instantly feels like a gorilla on your back and you look at the coming shows and responsibility with disdain. You may think it sounds pretty easy to bookmark these shows but there is a sort of moving target since year one and we have transitioned to a sort of short wick detonation of the comedy from the shows and opted for maximum comedy and shot after shot, quick pacing. In the beginning we focused more on the intriguing stories from the race season which were discussed on the show but as you well know, those Year’s in Review were forced to be broken into multiple files and though they were comprehensive looks at the race calendar of that year, they realllllly dragged on. We wanted quicker pacing with more entertainment.
We are now more critical with our bookmarkable selections than ever, focusing mostly on Laugh Out Loud moments. If it doesn’t make us laugh or have a strong chuckle, it isn’t bookmarked. Moser has been really good with the bookmarking, though he does work a little too much most of the time and actually bookmark upwards of 35 bits per show and I try to trim that number down to between 20 and 25. Whodathunk, Moser is a workaholic…I won’t go into the other type of “aholic-ism” he is commonly linked to (cough, Shorty’s Seattle SX win, cough).
When it comes down to “crunch time” as we like to call it, I prefer to sit down for a handful of marathon clip-pulling sessions where I will pull all the clips for 8 shows at a time. It’s harder than ever now with 3 kids but nothing could be as bad as year-one when Matthes emailed me in late November asking if we were doing this thing to be done within a month and not a single show bookmarked yet. I thought I could have died it was so laborious that first year.
The narration of these Year in Review shows has been a bit controversial over the years. The first year we did it to help explain what the whole deal was about. Since that first year, I have fought tooth and nail to not be part of them (just like the Roundtable shows <—thankfully I won THAT debate) but boss signs my checks and I dare not bite that hand. There’s this one fan of the show, Patrick Turner (@Pturn219) who REALLY loves when Moser and I do the commentary but I’m sad to say, he’s not gonna get his wish this year. Sorry Patrick, we appreciate your passion but Moser and I have to respectfully refute your desires. This year the plan is a simple intro, a thank you and a see ya in 2015!
Hopefully you laugh more than ever this year while listening to the Year in Review but if you don’t… hey it’s free like every single other show in the 800+ show PulpMX library. Enjoy, and Happy Holidays, PulpMX fans.
